Thomas was born about 1829, possibly in St. Marylebone, London.  He was son of Thomas Russell and Maria Hendry.

Thomas, like his father, was a schoolmaster. In 1867 he was headmaster at Magdalene College School at Brackley, Northamptonshire In 1870 he accepted a post at Westward Ho, N. Devon (some 3 miles from Bideford and one from Northam)

The 1871 census lists Thomas living in College, Northam, Devon. He is 42 years old and his occupation is M.A. Clergyman/ Schoolmaster. Also listed are his wife Juliana age 42; daughters Eleanor M. aged 14, born in Oxford, and Emma L. aged 12; son Herbert E. aged 11 born in Warwickshire; daughter Maria, aged 9 born in Banbury, Oxfordshire; and Margaret E. E, aged 4, born in Brackley who is also listed in the 1881 census. Also, listed as pupils are my great-grandfather William George Cross, aged 10 and his brother Edgar H. Cross aged 7. They are nephews of Thomas, sons of his sister Anne Maria.

The 1881 census lists Thomas living at 2 Nelson Terrace, Devon, England. Born in London, Middlesex, he is 51 years old and his occupation is Curate of Sherwell, Tutor. Also listed are his wife Juliana Lisetta , 51 years old, born in Oxford; daughter Margaret Elizabeth Emily, age 14, born in Brackley, Northampton; and son Arthur Earnest Russell, age 9, born Devon.
